Renaissance Voices is an amateur choir based in Maidenhead, whose repertoire focuses on the Renaissance and Baroque periods of classical music. We normally give three concerts a year, at St. Nicolas Church in Taplow, including a special festive one at Christmas.
Renaissance Voices was born in 2000 to cater for a desire of amateur singers from the Maidenhead area to rehearse and perform the choral repertoire of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Since our inaugural performance in July 2000, we have given nearly 50 concerts, mainly at St.Nicolas Church in Taplow. The choir is completely self financing, surviving on members' subscriptions and revenue from concert performances. Despite this, RV is often accompanied by a professional period instrument 'band' of strings and harpsichord.
Michael Sanderson, an accomplished musician, has been the choir's director and conductor from the outset. In his varied career he has sung as a lay clerk at St.George's Chapel Windsor; worked as a free-lance singer all over Europe; and for many years has run the extra-curricular student music at Brunel University.
'RV' are about 30 strong for most concerts, but not all members sing in every concert. As rehearsals are generally held fortnightly, the choir attracts singers with busy lives who may otherwise struggle to find time to belong to a choir. In the run up to a concert, rehearsals increase to weekly, with an afternoon rehearsal on the day of the performance. Every concert is followed by a buffet, giving the audience and performers a chance to socalise.
In common with all choirs, places become available in all sections, so if you would like to join please get in touch with our Membership Secretary, who will put you in contact with our musical director for an informal voice test.
