A visit made by our group to the excavations at Silchester, July 2014. The Site Director, Dr Amanda Clarke is giving us a radio-mike commentary on the Iron Age and Roman remains and the street plan.
The aim of Maidenhead Archeological & Historical Society is to explore, interpret, preserve and share as much historical and archaeological evidence as we can about the area in which we live, and beyond. The Society runs a lively series of lectures at the Community Centre, 42 York Road, at 8.00pm on the last Wednesday of each month (except July), on a wide range of topics. Visitors are warmly welcome. (There is a small charge for temporary membership.)
During the summer months, the Society organises a programme of coach outings to places of historic or archaeological interest. (Again, guests are welcome, on the same basis.) Members receive a regular newsletter; and the Society maintains contacts with other relevant bodies such as Maidenhead Heritage Centre and Berkshire Local History Association. Occasional fieldwork projects are carried out in the local area. We would encourage all who share an interest in our rich historical heritage to come and join us.
