Stanley Spencer Gallery

Discover the life and work of one of Britain’s most distinctive twentieth-century artists at the Stanley Spencer Gallery in the heart of Cookham, the village that Stanley Spencer called his ‘Village in Heaven’.
Housed in the former Wesleyan Chapel where Spencer worshipped as a child, the Gallery is dedicated to his life, work and imaginative world. Its changing programme of exhibitions brings together works from the Gallery’s own collection with loans from public and private collections, offering visitors the opportunity to see Spencer’s paintings and drawings in the place that inspired so much of his art.
The Gallery is run by volunteers and is an independent, self-funded charity and Fully Accredited Museum. Alongside its exhibitions, visitors can explore Spencer’s connection with Cookham through talks, guided walks and other events throughout the year.
Located on Cookham High Street, the Gallery is just a short walk from Cookham station and makes a rewarding addition to a visit to the village, with its riverside walks, historic buildings, pubs, cafés and restaurants.
